Traditional Seed Production Challenges

In traditional seed potato production, the process involves multiple stages and can extend over four to eight field generations. It begins with microtubers or indexed tubers and passes through various levels, such as Breeder/Basic Seed, Foundation Seed I and II, and Certified Seed I and II. Each generation takes approximately one year, and while more field multiplications reduce costs, they also increase the risk of disease accumulation, negatively impacting the yield potential of the final seed product.

1. Field Generation One Seed (FG-1)

   • Produced in the field from Mini Tuber seed, also known as Super Elite 1, Pre Elite, or Nuclear.

   • Exposed to field conditions for one year.

2. Field Generation Two Seed (FG-2)

   • Produced in the field from FG-1 seeds, also referred to as Super Elite 2 or Elite 1.

   • Exposed to field conditions for two years.

3. Field Generation Three Seed (FG-3)

   • Produced from FG-2 seeds and exposed to field conditions for three years, also known as Super Elite 3 or Elite 2.

   • These seeds are cultivated under stringent quality protocols, ensuring world-class standards are met.
