Technology at BJ Farms
Early Generation Seed Production
BJ Farms is a leader in the production of early generation seed potatoes, particularly Field Generation Three (FG-3) seeds, which are produced through a limited field multiplication process starting from FG-3 early generation seeds. This innovative approach allows BJ Farms to provide high-quality seeds that are less exposed to pathogenic diseases, resulting in superior yield and healthier crops.
All About Potatoes at Our Farm
Traditional Seed Production Challenges
In traditional seed potato production, the process involves multiple stages and can extend over four to eight field generations. It begins with microtubers or indexed tubers and passes through various levels, such as Breeder/Basic Seed, Foundation Seed I and II, and Certified Seed I and II. Each generation takes approximately one year, and while more field multiplications reduce costs, they also increase the risk of disease accumulation, negatively impacting the yield potential of the final seed product.

Compressed Seed Supply Chain:
BJ Farms has introduced a more efficient seed production process through rapid multiplication techniques, such as Mini Tuber technology. This method significantly reduces the number of field generations required, leading to healthier, higher-quality seed potatoes with minimized disease buildup.
Industry Benefits of Mini Tuber Technology
-
Rapid Introduction of New Varieties: This technology allows for faster introduction of new and improved potato varieties, helping farmers quickly adapt to market demands.
-
Reduced Disease Accumulation: Fewer field multiplications lead to less disease buildup, improving the overall quality and health of the seed potatoes.
-
Lower Transport Costs: Mini Tuber technology reduces the need for extensive transportation of seed products, saving costs in the early stages of the seed supply chain.
-
Enhanced Traceability and Control: Greater oversight and traceability of seed production ensure a reliable and consistent product.
-
Support for Emerging Potato Processing Industries: Quick establishment of potato supply chains supports new processing sectors.
-
Reduced Dependence on Imported Seeds: Locally produced, early generation seeds reduce reliance on expensive imported seeds, mitigating the risk of introducing foreign soil diseases and saving on foreign exchange.
